I have to do this quickly - and I mean quickly!
I was sitting placidly at an Eastside Ministers' meeting when I remembered that I had not turned in this little article - and today is the deadline. And as I rushed home - in the rain! - to write this, I remembered that my two cats were locked outside, and they hate to get wet. I think they must be Methodists. A couple of drops of water will keep some Methodists home from church! I hope it doesn't rain in heaven. Methodists will always choose a warm dry place - and we all know where that is!
I've fed my cats - I'm beginning to catch my breath. Now let's talk about something important. I am beginning a new mid-week worship and Bible study, because I miss the heck out of it when I am not doing one. Twenty-five minutes on Sunday mornings is not enough time for me to publicly wrestle with the glories of The Book. And the Bible grows more glorious for me all the time. I am in awe before its insight, its artistry, the sheer power of its story.
We will begin with a study of one of my favorite books - the story of Jonah in the Old Testament. You know - Jonah and the big fish. I can't wait to talk about it. You may think that Jonah is the "hero" of the story. If so, he's a weird hero. Everybody in the story is more righteous than he is. Even the big fish makes a better impression!
Here's the way "The Mid-Week" will work. We will meet at St. Matthew every Wednesday at 5:30 for a bit of pot-luck supper. Come for supper or skip it. From 6:00 to 7:00 we will have worship and Bible study. Our new Scout troops meet at this time also - Cub Scouts at 6:00 - Boy Scouts at 7:00. (Just beginning - looking for new Scouts to join them.)
I've joked a lot here about Methodists. One nice thing about our church is that people from other churches usually feel at home with us. I invite all who want to know more about the Bible to join us for this study - starting this coming Wednesday - even if it is just before Thanksgiving. Come to the great Thanksgiving supper we have at Eastern Hills this Sunday evening - 6:00 p.m. Informal - and joyful. |
