I believe a lot of things that may seem strange to "non-believers."
I believe in a "God of might and miracle." I believe in the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. I believe that God is available to all of us through personal experience. I believe in the reality of heaven, and I even believe that people have had glimpses of it through near-death experiences. So I believe a lot of "strange" things that might make some scientific sorts laugh at me. But I believe nothing without reason. I believe what I believe because I know God -- because I have experienced God -- because I have found God in Jesus Christ, who meets every question raised by reason and experience. "When you have seen me," said Jesus, "you have seen the Father." So I don't believe everything I see or read about God. I don't have to. I know God. I can make judgments.
Take the movie The Omega Code, for example. It is based on confusion about God and about the Bible. There is no secret code in the Bible, revealed today by computers. The Jewish scholars who thought they had found one a couple of years ago have now been proven wrong. You can get the same results with a Hebrew translation of War and Peace -- or any other text long enough to allow for a lot of random selecting. But no one had to prove this to me. I knew right off that it was foolishness. I know God! God doesn't do secret codes. God is revealed in the Bible -- not hidden in riddles. And it doesn't take a computer to find out God's heart. God is clear before us -- fully revealed in Jesus Christ. There's no riddle here.
I read recently in the supermarket tabloid Weekly World News that the skeletons of Adam and Eve have been discovered in Colorado. You can believe it if you want to -- but I would take that and The Omega Code with a bit of Lot's wife. Pillar of salt, don't ya know?
My sermon series called Three Prayers begins this Sunday at St. Matthew. I will be sharing some remarkable experiences. Eastern Hills has another great pancake breakfast and rummage sale this Saturday, starting at 8:00 a.m. Don't miss it. |
