One of my favorite stories is about a Texan with no sense of humor and a cab driver in Kansas City.
The cab driver liked to keep his customers entertained, so he asked the Texan to solve a riddle. "I'm not very good at that sort of thing," said the Texan, "but I'll give it a try." "Good for you!," said the cabbie. "Here's the riddle:
It's not my sister "Gosh," said the Texan, "that's a hard one. I just wouldn't know. Who is it?" "IT'S ME! " said the driver, letting out a big laugh. "IT'S ME!" The Texan thought he got it and laughed too. And when he got home to Fort Worth he wanted to try the riddle on his wife. He felt sure he could get it right. "Here it is," he said. "Let me see how it went:
It's not my sister His wife thought for a moment and gave up. "Who is it?" she asked. Her husband gave a grin of satisfaction at having slumped her and pronounced the answer as if any fool would know: "It's this cab driver up in Kansas City!"
We're all a bit slow in some things. A lot of people think that God's love is for some cab driver in Kansas City, or for a neighbor down the street, but not for them. But a miracle happens in our lives when this truth hits us: "It is for ME!" Some people think the hardest thing to accept about the Christian message is the Resurrection. But I don't think so. The hardest thing to accept is that God loves us in the way Jesus said God loves us -- personally -- and forever. If we can accept this, the Resurrection is -- as they say -- "a piece o' cake! " If God does love us, the whole Christian story makes obvious and glorious sense. "Not a sparrow falls without your Father's knowledge," said our Lord, "and you are of more value than many sparrows." I believe him. And I believe this love is for me -- and for you -- as well as for the cab driver in Kansas City. Be in church somewhere this Sunday. |
