You've heard the old saying "raining cats and dogs." Well that seemed to he what was happening recently as I drove on 1-30 through Arlington.

A cat fell out of the sky.

It was the most remarkable sight I had ever seen. A cat fell from the sky right in front of my pickup. I slowed down to avoid running over it.

This is the kind of thing that makes us start looking around for Rod Sterling. This was surely the Twilight Zone. But as I began to prepare my mind for other falling animals - dogs, elephants - I realized I had seen something that would not have even recorded in my mind without the falling cat. I was vaguely aware of a car slowing down on an overpass above just before the cat fell from the sky.

That was it, of course. Someone had thrown the cat from the car on the overpass - thrown it to the concrete freeway far below, just for the thrill of seeing the animal killed.

But it wasn't killed!

It landed - it seemed almost in slow motion - just ahead of me on the freeway. It came down on all fours and ran off to the side of the road, untouched by the traffic, apparently uninjured by the fall.

But what I saw hurt me.

Ooooooh - I was angry!

I had just witnessed an act of heartless cruelty, and I was determined that evil not win this one.

I turned around to look for the cat - heaven help me! I didn't need another one. I've still got two, even with Old Gooseberry gone. I'm not in the market for cats.

But I looked hard for this one - searched both sides of the road, running back and forth across the heavy traffic of I-30 calling "Kitty-kitty-kitty!"

I never found it - but I like to think it ran off and found a home.

They say "the best revenge is living well." I hope that kitten found a welcome somewhere and is eating only the high - priced stuff.

And I thought about those who had thrown the cat from the overpass. I wondered how much more damage they would do in the world before they were through.

People who are cruel to animals have cruelty within them, and it will come out in every relationship of their lives.

And I believe that an offense against any of God's creation is an offense against God.

Be in church this Sunday. Let God know which side you're on.
