I have a friend who recently became a Bob Dylan fan - after years of hating him. I don't know how it happened.
I'm a Dylan fan, too - and have been since 1965, but I never try to convert others, I consider it hopeless. I know that Bobby is the world's greatest singer; but even as I say this I can hear some of you laughing. So be it. Bobby is a hard sell. My friend's "conversion" is a mystery. I can't explain it. But Christian conversion is something else. It never surprises me, I expect it. Because Jesus is an easy sell. He answers questions no one else can answer. He loves us with a love no one else can give. He holds before us a picture of God that exceeds in grace and beauty every other divine image. When we come to know Jesus Christ, the fragmented pieces of life come together to reveal the meaning and purpose of our existence. Becoming a Christian is the most natural thing in the world. I heard of a devoted Christian woman who had written a book about her faith. She was in England signing copies of the book when she was approached by another woman who seemed to have taken an overdose of sophistication - dressed with fashion, hair just so, and with makeup that showed no signs of wear. She was, said the author, "all Vogue on the outside - and all vague on the inside." "I'll take one of your books," said the lady. "It's for a friend. She's into that sort of thing." "What sort of thing?" asked the author. "That religion thing. Isn't that what your book is about?" "No, my dear," replied the author; "it is about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ." A tear rolled down across the immaculate makeup as the woman said softly, "Then sign one for me. I don't have that." That was an easy sell. Often it doesn't take much, because there is a hole in our lives that can be filled only by God's love. Or as Augustine put it, "Our hearts are restless 'till they find rest in God." Now, Bobby Dylan - that's another matter, I've decided he's an acquired taste. Jesus Christ is a necessity of life. Be in church somewhere this Sunday. Let God fill the void in your heart. |
