The young couple had inherited a family tradition. On Memorial Day they went to the cemetery to care for the family plot. This year their three year old daughter was old enough to ask questions:

"What's a cemetery?" she asked.

They struggled to explain, and finally just said honestly, "It's a place where people we love are buried."

Looking at the hoe they were putting in the back of the car, the child asked, "Are we going to dig them up?"

Some people seem to think that if Jesus gets up and out of that grave, somebody has to dig him up.

We forget -- or fail to believe in -- the power of God.

A preacher said to me recently, "Worship is hard work."

I jokingly told him he must be trying to do God's part.

Getting ready for worship can be hard work. But I find that worship itself offers me one of the few times during a week when I can really relax.

Worship is a rich, glorious experience for me. And preaching feels like participating in a miracle. I do it -- but I don't really understand it. I leave the pulpit sometimes feeling like I have been working in a close and personal way with the Lord -- enriched by his presence, challenged by his word.

And that book we work with, the Bible, is a repository of infinite creative and spiritual power -- a window to the mystery of God.

I am in awe of the Bible's wonders. Close contact with a great passages of scripture can make us feel that we have touched the hem of our Lord's garment.

Why is all of this so?

Because God is reality.

The Gospel is true.

And worship is rooted in the truth and power of God.

Through worship, we encounter God -- and grow in grace and understanding.

Which leads to my question to you: Are you doing that now?

Are you growing in grace and understanding?

Are you regularly in worship? If not -- get to church somewhere.

If you are not in worship, you are missing something that gives us the power to live -- and the will to love.
