I love good movies.

I haven't seen many lately.

I hear they're in color now -- with sound!

Sure, I'm jesting, but I don't get to go to movies very often.

I did see The Talented Mr. Ripley. You may be surprised to hear this, but I thought it was a great film -- a profound study of evil.

It helps us understand the tragedy at Columbine High School. The Ripley character is evil, but above all, he hates himself.

So did those kids who killed their classmates.

I thought about walking out of Ripley in the middle of it, because I thought the filmmaker was just entertaining us with evil. Then I began to see the message. The film has a profound moral core. I was shaken -- and moved by it.

Some people go to the movies to be entertained.

I don't.

I can sit at home and laugh at my TV. When I go to the trouble to see a film, I want the movie to say something.

And truth is, I usually judge a movie by its theology -- and most movies have some image of God even if God is never mentioned in the film.

Take The Truman Show, for example. Did you see that one?

A great religious film.

Most people didn't see any religion at all in that movie -- but then, they probably weren't looking for it.

In March we're going to resume Saturday evening services, and movies will sometimes play a part in them. We'll watch a video at church, or go out and see a movie, then discuss it.

The first movie we'll see:  The Truman Show.

Most Saturdays, though, will be devoted to "Faith Talk," a discussion of provocative topics from a faith perspective.

Example:  "Should South Carolina remove the Confederate flag from its capitol? What does the Bible have to say about it?

And this one:  Should Christians target other religious groups for conversion?

And some milder topics:  "Can faith affect depression?"

In "Faith Talk" we're going to see how faith in Christ affects what we believe, how we feel, and how we live our daily lives.

Saturdays -- starting in March. Dinner at 5:00. "Faith Talk" at 6:00.

And I get you on Saturday night -- let Nancy Allen have you on Sunday night at Eastern Hills -- 6:00 p.m.

But we're not the only show in town. Worship somewhere this Sunday.
