PASTOR'S CORNER

Talking first-time events of major significance:

You know -- like Columbus (or whoever) discovering America, and Copernicus discovering -- well -- what ever Copernicus discovered.

We're talking big events here, and we're headed for one on February 21st at 6:00 p.m.

We will have our first St. Matthew/Eastern Hills concert with a live band!!!

Just like Garth Brooks -- without his money.

And without Garth Brooks.

(But if Garth wants to sing on the program, he's more than welcome.)

It will be at St. Matthew, but the program is sponsored jointly by both churches, St. Matthew and Eastern Hills.

My fellow pastor, Nancy Allen, will also be involved with this production.

Nancy won't sing, now mind you. She doesn't do that.

No one has ever heard Nancy sing.

If she did, it would be a rare thing, and some people would pay good money to hear it --

But Rev Nancy says that's not going to happen on the 21st.

We will, however, have others singing besides me, including members of the live band.

We're talking here a couple of guitarists, a drummer, and a keyboard player.

We'll put one guitarist right over by that 175 year old pulpit. We'll move out the Lord's table and set up the drums.

And that keyboard?

I guess we'll just squeeze it in right between the lectern and the communion rail!

Listen -- just what is the church coming to?

Actually, the church is coming to meet people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ in every way it can.

I love the variety you find in churches now. At our two churches our morning services are joyful but traditional. Our music includes both the old and the new.

On other occasions -- like our "concerts"-you may hear Garth Brooks' The River sung in a Gospel context, or Amazing Grace sung to a country beat that would do George Jones proud.

I don't know how things will go on February 21st. We've never used a live band before.

But it's time, don't you think?

The Gospel is true. Let's find every way we can to tell the world.
