"Life is difficult."
Quick -- what famous book begins with that line? Surely you know. You can't be the only person in America who hasn't read "The Road Less Traveled," Scott Peck's fine book about "love, traditional values, and spiritual growth." It is, perhaps, the best-known self-help book ever written, and deservedly so, I think. I have enjoyed using it for years in study groups, and pulling illustrations from it for preaching. It has its limitations but it is still amazingly wise, direct, and honest about the human condition. And it draws heavily on the Biblical understanding of reality, which is why I find it so very useful.
And now I want to use it in a new way. I am starting a series of worship services called "Learning to Live -- The Gospel and The Road Less Traveled." But let me make this clear: scripture will be the foundation; Road Less Traveled will provide the illustration.
You hear people say, "This could change your life." Well -- I think this worship series might do just that, because it will help us apply the teachings of Christ to the places where we hurt. The Gospel is the best psychology.
These will be worship services -- with songs, prayers, and scripture. But the sermons will be a bit different, involving discussion and feedback. People can participate in the discussion -- or not. People can read the suggested scriptures -- or not. People can read The Road Less Traveled -- or not. Some people may simply want to take home what they hear in the service. Still -- this -- as they say -- could change your life.
The new services begin on February 10th and 11th -- Saturday the 10th at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday the 11th at 9:30 a.m. (We offer Sunday school also at 9:30 on Sunday mornings.)
At 11:00 on Sunday mornings I am preaching through the Gospel of Luke in one year. Of course, you may not come to, any of this. But I hope you will be in worship somewhere. The Gospel is reality. Without it -- we live a lie. |
