July 4th - Independence Day

July 4, 1997

July 4, 1997. Many of us will be spending the day with friends and family or having a picnic at the lake. Terry and I'll be having friends over for a cookout and then we're off to the Ranger game. But just how many of you know some of the history behind July 4? You probably read about it in school years ago, but may have forgotten a lot of it, so let's have a quick refresher course.

The following excerpt is taken from the Microsoft Encarta 96 Encyclopedia.

"July 4 is a national holiday commemorating the formal adoption by the Continental Congress of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia. Although the signing of the Declaration was not completed until August, the Fourth of July has been accepted as the official anniversary of United States independence and is celebrated in all states and territories of the U.S.

The holiday was first observed in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776, at which time the Declaration of Independence was read aloud, city bells rang, and bands played. It was not declared a legal holiday until 1941."

I don't know about you, but I learned many interesting facts about the 4th that I was not aware of.
